FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SAN DIEGO – May 10, 2022 – San Diego’s Favorite® casino, Valley View Casino & Hotel has partnered once again with the ALS Association Greater San Diego Chapter to host the 7th Annual ALS Fiesta fundraiser on Wednesday, May 18 starting at 6PM. The annual event supports the association’s mission to discover more treatments and a cure for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and to serve, advocate for and empower all families that are affected by ALS.

This year’s event will focus on advocacy and in particular, the sports organizations that provide advocacy, awareness and support for ALS. The event will be a night filled with poolside cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, mariachi music and a silent auction, followed by a gourmet dinner, a program with speakers and a paddle raise, all to benefit the ALS Association.

“Studies have suggested that there is a link between athletes, physical activity and ALS,” said Steve Becvar, Executive Director for the ALS Association Greater San Diego Chapter. “This connection between athletes and ALS is alarming. The San Diego sports community has taken notice and we’re grateful for their support.”

Many notable athletes and sports personalities will be in attendance, including one of the most successful sports coaches, Steve Fisher, former head basketball coach at SDSU, Brian Dutcher, current SDSU head basketball coach, and Ted Leitner, longtime sports broadcaster, will serve as the emcee for the evening. Emmy Award Winning Broadcast Journalist Jane Mitchell will serve as special Fiesta correspondent.

Some of the organizations that the event will highlight are the San Diego Padres, San Diego State University, Point Loma Nazarene University, University of San Diego, Swish Pro-Am basketball league, San Diego Sockers, and more.

The ALS Association Greater San Diego Chapter’s purpose is to discover treatments and a cure for ALS, and to serve, advocate for, and empower people affected by ALS to live their lives to the fullest. ALS, or more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

“It is an honor and privilege for our team to host this very special night to support as many families as possible that are affected by ALS. We are very proud and honored to support such a worthwhile cause and the amazing ALS Family. We look forward to hearing more about the continuing progress being made by the ALS Association every day,” says Bruce Howard, General Manager of Valley View Casino & Hotel.

Valley View Casino & Hotel is proudly sponsoring and hosting the ALS Association Greater San Diego Chapter Fiesta Fundraising Dinner for the third time in the past 5 years, having to postpone the event during the COVID pandemic.

About The ALS Association Greater San Diego Chapter

The ALS Association of Greater San Diego Chapter’s purpose is to discover treatments and a cure for ALS, and to serve, advocate for, and empower people affected by ALS to live their lives to the fullest. ALS, or more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. ALS usually strikes people between the ages of 40 and 70, and approximately 20,000 people in the U.S. have the disease at any given time.

Although there is not yet a cure or treatment that cures ALS, scientists that are funded through the ALS Association research program have made significant progress in understanding what causes ALS. The symptoms of ALS usually start with progressive loss of muscle control, and gradual loss of the ability to speak, swallow, walk, grasp objects, move, and breathe.
